The Growing Importance of Investor Relations Hiring in London For listed companies and investment funds, the relationship with investors is one of the most valuable assets the organisation holds. Hiring an investor relations manager in London is therefore a decision that carries real weight, because the person in the role shapes how shareholders, analysts and limited partners understand the business. A strong appointment builds trust. A weak one can erode it quickly. Yet investor relations is often misunderstood, even by experienced hiring teams. The role looks very different at a listed company than it does at a private equity firm or alternative investment fund, and the skills that matter vary accordingly. Getting the brief right from the start is essential. What Does an Investor Relations Manager Do? An investor relations manager manages communication between an organisation and its investors, making sure they receive accurate, timely and consistent information. In practice, they act as the bridge between senior leadership and the people who provide or oversee capital. Day to day, an investor relations manager prepares materials, coordinates meetings, responds to investor queries and helps leadership present performance and strategy clearly. They also gather feedback from investors and relay it internally, giving the board and senior team a valuable view of how they are perceived. Done well, investor relations is a two-way discipline rather than a broadcast function. How Does Investor Relations Differ at a Listed Company? At a listed company, investor relations centres on communicating with public shareholders and the wider market in line with the company's disclosure obligations. The investor relations manager typically supports results announcements, investor and analyst meetings, annual general meetings and roadshows. Results periods are usually the most intense part of the calendar. The investor relations manager may help prepare presentations, coordinate analyst calls and track the market's response afterwards. Between results, the focus shifts to maintaining relationships with existing shareholders and identifying potential new ones. Listed companies must manage market communications carefully, particularly where information could be price sensitive. An investor relations manager in this setting needs a sound working understanding of the relevant disclosure rules and close collaboration with the company secretary, legal advisers and finance team. Requirements vary by market and listing, so businesses should always take appropriate legal and regulatory advice. What Does Investor Relations Look Like in Private Equity and Alternative Investment Funds? In private equity and alternative investment funds, investor relations focuses on building long-term relationships with limited partners and supporting the firm's fundraising. The investor base is usually smaller and more concentrated than at a listed company, so relationships tend to be deeper and more personal. The work typically includes preparing investor reporting, responding to due diligence questionnaires, managing data rooms and organising investor events such as annual meetings. Investor relations professionals in funds work closely with the deal team, finance and compliance to keep everything shared with investors accurate and consistent. Fundraising brings particular pressure, with detailed questionnaires, investor meetings and data room requests arriving alongside the needs of existing limited partners. Candidates with direct fund experience understand this rhythm in a way that is difficult to teach quickly. What Skills Should You Look for in an Investor Relations Manager? The most important skills in an investor relations manager are financial literacy, strong written communication, discretion, stakeholder management, organisation and sound judgement under pressure. Financial literacy allows the investor relations manager to understand performance, explain it accurately and answer technical questions with confidence. Written communication is just as critical, since much of the role involves drafting reports, presentations and responses that sophisticated investors will read closely. Discretion is fundamental, because investor relations professionals routinely handle sensitive and sometimes price sensitive information. Stakeholder management matters because the role sits between leadership, internal teams and external investors, each with different expectations. Strong organisation and calm judgement tie everything together, particularly during results seasons or a fundraise. How Is an Investor Relations Team Structured? Most investor relations teams are built around an Investor Relations Manager, supported by an Investor Relations Associate and an Investor Relations Coordinator or Assistant. The size of the team depends on the scale of the organisation and the complexity of its investor base, and smaller firms often combine these responsibilities in one or two people. The Investor Relations Manager typically owns the strategy, the key relationships and the quality of external communication. An Associate often supports with analysis, reporting and preparing materials, while the Coordinator or Assistant manages logistics, scheduling, investor databases and events. Business support plays an important role around the team. Executive Assistants supporting the CEO, CFO or managing partners often coordinate investor meetings, travel and roadshow logistics, so they need to work closely with investor relations to keep diaries and priorities aligned. Why Is London a Major Centre for Investor Relations Talent? London is one of the world's leading centres for both listed companies and investment funds, which gives employers access to a deep and experienced pool of investor relations professionals. Its established capital markets, concentration of private equity and alternative investment firms and international investor base make it a natural home for the discipline. This depth works both ways. Employers can find candidates with highly relevant experience, but they are also competing with many other firms for the same people. Strong investor relations professionals are approached regularly, so a clear proposition and an efficient process make a real difference. What Should You Assess When Interviewing an Investor Relations Manager? At interview, assess how well candidates understand your type of investor relations, how clearly they communicate and how they handle sensitive information. A candidate who excels at a listed company may need time to adjust to a fund environment, and the reverse is also true. Ask for specific examples rather than general statements. Practical exercises can be revealing. Asking a candidate to summarise a set of results or draft a short investor update shows their thinking in real time and tests the written clarity the role depends on. Explore judgement directly. Ask how they have handled a situation where they could not share information, balanced competing demands from senior stakeholders or corrected an error in investor materials. Their answers will reveal a great deal about their discretion and maturity. How Do You Hire an Investor Relations Manager Well? To hire an investor relations manager well, start with a clear brief, run a focused process and protect confidentiality at every stage. Define whether you need listed company experience, fund experience or both, and be specific about seniority, scope and reporting line. Confidentiality is especially important in investor relations searches. Organisations may not want investors, the market or current employees to know they are hiring, particularly if the search relates to a leadership change or an upcoming fundraise. Anonymised briefs, discreet candidate approaches and a small, controlled interview panel all help protect sensitive information. A specialist recruitment partner can make the process more efficient and more secure. The consultants at Eden Recruitment Group have deep experience across private equity, alternative investment and corporate sectors, which helps them understand the nuances of each type of investor relations role. Final Thoughts Hiring an investor relations manager in London is a significant decision for any fund or listed company. The right person strengthens relationships with investors, supports leadership and protects the organisation's reputation. Taking the time to define the role clearly, assess candidates thoroughly and run a confidential search gives you the best chance of a successful appointment. What Does a Company Secretary Do? A Guide for UK Businesses

Why the Executive Business Partner Title Is Appearing More Often An Executive Business Partner and an Executive Assistant both support senior leaders, but the titles usually signal different expectations. An Executive Assistant is typically focused on managing a leader's time, communications and logistics, while an Executive Business Partner is generally expected to add strategic and project-based support on top of that foundation. The title you choose shapes who applies. A role advertised as an Executive Assistant may attract excellent operators who are not looking for project ownership. A role advertised as an Executive Business Partner may attract candidates who expect a seat in leadership conversations, and who will quickly lose interest if the reality is mostly diary management. This guide explains how the roles differ, where they overlap and how to hire for the one your business actually needs. What Is an Executive Assistant? An Executive Assistant is a senior support professional who manages the time, priorities and communications of one or more executives so they can focus on the work only they can do. The core of the role is operational: diary management, travel, correspondence, meeting preparation and acting as the first point of contact for the executive. That description undersells many senior EAs. At C-suite level, an Executive Assistant often handles sensitive information, manages board and investor relationships, and anticipates problems before they reach the executive. The defining feature, however, is that the role is built around enabling the executive rather than owning separate business outcomes. Success is measured by how effectively the leader's time and attention are protected and directed. What Is an Executive Business Partner? An Executive Business Partner is a senior support professional who combines the core responsibilities of an Executive Assistant with a more strategic remit, often including ownership of projects, operational initiatives and leadership team processes. The EBP is expected to act as a thought partner to the executive, not only as a manager of their time. In practice, an EBP might run the leadership team's operating rhythm, drive cross-functional projects or prepare analysis ahead of key decisions. Some organisations position the EBP as a step between a senior EA and a Chief of Staff, while others use it simply for their most senior assistant roles. Where Did the Executive Business Partner Title Come From? The Executive Business Partner title emerged in the United States and is now widely used there, particularly in technology and finance businesses. It recognised that senior assistants were often doing far more than the traditional title suggested. The title has since spread to other markets, including the UK, and is increasingly seen in London among technology firms, investment businesses and US-headquartered companies with local offices. It remains less common than Executive Assistant, which is still the standard title in most UK organisations. Because the title is relatively new outside the US, candidates and employers do not always understand it in the same way. What Are the Key Differences Between an Executive Business Partner and an Executive Assistant? The key difference between an Executive Business Partner and an Executive Assistant is the balance between strategic and operational work. An EA's emphasis is usually operational support for the executive, while an EBP is typically expected to own projects, influence stakeholders and contribute to decision-making. Several distinctions tend to follow from this. An EBP is more likely to own initiatives end to end, such as an office move, an offsite or a new reporting process. They usually have greater influence with stakeholders across the business, and they often provide decision support by gathering information, summarising options and flagging risks. Many EBPs also attend leadership meetings, set agendas and track actions. That said, many senior Executive Assistants already work in exactly this way, and titles vary widely by organisation. A highly experienced EA at a private equity firm may carry more strategic responsibility than an EBP elsewhere, so the title alone tells you less than the remit. Where Do the Two Roles Overlap? The two roles overlap heavily in the core support functions: diary management, travel, communications and gatekeeping. Both an Executive Assistant and an Executive Business Partner are expected to protect the executive's time, manage their inbox and calendar, and decide who gets access and when. This shared foundation is non-negotiable. An EBP who neglects the operational detail will quickly lose the executive's trust, however strong their strategic contribution. For this reason, many EBPs have progressed from senior EA roles, with the strategic remit layered on top of a strong assistant skill set. Which Role Does Your Business Need? Your business needs an Executive Assistant if the main challenge is the executive's time, communications and logistics, and an Executive Business Partner if the executive also needs someone to drive projects and operational priorities on their behalf. The answer depends on what is currently falling through the gaps. A founder whose diary is chaotic and who travels constantly is likely to benefit most from a highly capable EA. A CEO whose schedule is under control but whose leadership team rarely follows through on actions may benefit more from an EBP who can own the operating rhythm. Some businesses choose a middle ground, hiring a senior EA with a defined project element and allowing the role to grow. This works well when expectations are agreed at the outset. How Should You Title and Write the Job Description? You should title the role based on its actual remit, not on what sounds most attractive, because an inflated or understated title will attract the wrong candidates. If the role is mainly operational, call it Executive Assistant. If it includes genuine project ownership and leadership involvement, Executive Business Partner may be more accurate. The job description should state how time is expected to be split between core support and strategic work. Name the types of projects, the meetings the person will attend, the key stakeholders and the level of decision-making authority. It also helps to explain how the role might evolve, as EBP candidates often want to understand the career path. What Should You Assess at Interview? At interview, you should assess both the core assistant skills and, for an EBP role, the candidate's ability to think strategically, own outcomes and influence others. Neither should be assumed from the title on a CV. For any senior support role, test organisation, judgement and discretion through practical scenarios, such as a conflicting diary or a sensitive request. For an EBP, add questions about projects the candidate has led end to end, how they have influenced senior stakeholders without formal authority and how they have supported a decision with analysis. A short case exercise, such as prioritising competing leadership demands, shows how a candidate thinks rather than how they describe themselves. Final Thoughts The difference between an Executive Business Partner and an Executive Assistant is less about the title and more about the remit. Both roles rest on the same foundation of exceptional organisation and judgement, but an EBP is usually expected to take on project ownership, stakeholder influence and decision support. The most important step is to define what your executive genuinely needs before choosing a title. At Eden Recruitment Group, we often find that a clear conversation about the remit at the start of a search leads to a far better match than the title alone. FAQ: Executive Business Partner vs Executive Assistant What is the main difference between an Executive Business Partner and an Executive Assistant? An Executive Assistant mainly provides operational support, managing an executive's diary, travel and communications. An Executive Business Partner covers those core duties but typically adds a strategic remit, such as owning projects, supporting decisions and contributing to leadership meetings. The exact scope varies by organisation, so the job description matters more than the title. Is an Executive Business Partner more senior than an Executive Assistant? An Executive Business Partner is often positioned as more senior, because the role usually includes project ownership and wider stakeholder influence. However, many senior Executive Assistants already work at a strategic level, and titles differ between organisations. It is best to compare the actual responsibilities, reporting lines and decision-making authority rather than relying on the title. Should I hire an Executive Business Partner or an Executive Assistant? Hire an Executive Assistant if your executive mainly needs help with time, communications and logistics. Consider an Executive Business Partner if they also need someone to drive projects, run leadership processes and support decisions. Defining the gaps you need to fill before choosing a title will help you attract the right candidates. If your business is looking to hire an Executive Business Partner or a senior Executive Assistant, working with a specialist business support recruiter can help you define the remit clearly and find a candidate who matches it.
